Wollongong

Australia and New Zealand

Wollongong is a coastal city in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, occupying a narrow plain between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra Escarpment about 85 kilometers south of Sydney. The area's first European settlers, Charles Throsby Smith and Sarah Broughton Smith, arrived in 1823, and the town was formally gazetted in 1834 after earlier visits by explorers George Bass and Matthew Flinders. Long built on coal mining and steel production at nearby Port Kembla, Wollongong is today New South Wales's third-largest city and home to the University of Wollongong, with a metropolitan population of about 305,691 at the 2021 census.
