Pago Pago

Pago Pago is the capital of American Samoa, a United States territory on Tutuila Island in the South Pacific, and the southernmost capital under the American flag, the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. First settled by Polynesian navigators around 4,000 years ago, it became the territory's administrative capital in 1899 after the Tripartite Convention transferred Tutuila to United States control, drawn by one of the deepest natural harbors in the South Pacific. That harbor still anchors the local economy today, supporting the world's largest tuna cannery and a fishing fleet that lands more fish by value than any other United States port or territory; the village itself had about 3,000 residents in 2020, within a wider harbor area of roughly 15,000.
