Hervey Bay is a coastal city in Queensland's Fraser Coast Region, Australia, about 290 kilometers north of Brisbane, on traditional Butchulla land. The bay was named by James Cook in 1770 for Augustus Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol, and the settlement of Pialba developed there from 1863, with the city reaching official city status in 1984 and a population of 57,722 at the 2021 census. Its economy centers on tourism, particularly whale watching in Platypus Bay and ferry services to K'gari (Fraser Island), and in 2019 it became the first Whale Heritage Site in the world according to the World Cetacean Alliance.
