Levuka is a town on the island of Ovalau in Fiji's Lomaiviti Province, founded by European settlers around 1820 and Fiji's first modern town. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Fiji after Seru Epenisa Cakobau's coronation there in 1871, and again as the early colonial capital until the seat of government moved to Suva in 1877 because the surrounding hills and cliffs left no room for the town to grow. Levuka held Fiji's first bank, post office, newspaper and public school, and in 2013 UNESCO listed its 19th century port town streetscape as a World Heritage Site.
