Tavua is a town in Ba Province on Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, about 9 kilometers from the gold mining settlement of Vatukoula. Formally established as a town in 1992 and covering some 100 square kilometers, it functioned as a service center supporting the mining industry and surrounding farming communities, governed by an elected town council until Fiji's 2009 military backed government replaced elected municipal bodies with appointed administrators. Its 2017 census population was 8,810.
