Ebeye is the most populous island of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, a nation in free association with the United States, covering only about 0.36 square kilometers yet holding around 10,000 residents as of 2021, among the most densely populated small islands on Earth. Marshallese residents were relocated there in the 1950s from elsewhere in Kwajalein Atoll to make way for nearby United States nuclear testing and missile-range facilities, and the island, connected by a causeway completed in 1992 to the neighboring islets of Loi, Shell and Gugeegue, today hosts the Marshall Islands' Emergency Operations Center. It faces persistent shortages of fresh water and struggles with sewage management and wave inundation from rising seas.
