Fakaofo is the southernmost of Tokelau's three atolls, a New Zealand territory in the central Pacific, with about 483 residents. Known traditionally as the chiefly island, it held customary dominion over the other two atolls, Atafu and Nukunonu, and received both Protestant and Catholic missionary influence; early European explorers called it Bowditch Island.
