Gisborne is the largest settlement in New Zealand's Gisborne District, on the North Island's east coast at the meeting of the Waimata, Taruheru and Turanganui rivers. Originally known as Turanga and settled by European traders from the 1830s, it was renamed in 1870 for colonial secretary William Gisborne to avoid confusion with Tauranga; its population was 36,912 at the 2023 census. The city is where Captain James Cook made his first landing in New Zealand in 1769, and its economy today rests on agriculture, horticulture and forestry alongside a wine industry.
