Hastings, New Zealand

Hastings is a city on New Zealand North Island in the Hawke Bay region, about 18 kilometers south of the coastal city of Napier. Its urban area had about 49,800 residents as of June 2025, with the wider Hastings District holding about 88,300 people. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake on February 3, 1931 killed 93 people in Hastings and destroyed much of the downtown, which was rebuilt in the Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles of the 1930s. Hastings District is a major agricultural and wine producing region, with the fertile Heretaunga Plains growing stone fruit, kiwifruit and internationally recognized red wines.
