New Plymouth, known in Maori as Ngamotu, is the principal city of the Taranaki region on New Zealand's North Island. European whalers and traders made contact with the area's Maori iwi from around 1823, and the first organized settlers arrived on the William Bryan on March 31, 1841, the town becoming a fortified garrison during conflict with Maori in 1860 and 1861 and being declared a city in 1949. Its urban population was 60,200 in June 2025. New Plymouth serves as a service center for dairy farming and the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, and it won the International Awards for Liveable Communities in 2021 for its population category.
