Kokopo is the capital of East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea. It became the provincial capital in 1994, replacing Rabaul after the eruptions of the Tavurvur and Vulcan volcanoes; its population grew more than sixfold in the following decade, from 3,150 in 1990 to 20,262 in 2000.
