Luganville, on the island of Espiritu Santo, is the second-largest city in Vanuatu after the capital, Port Vila, and is also called Santo by northern islanders and Kanal by rural residents. It served as a major American military base during the Second World War, when four airfields and extensive facilities were built there, and its main street, Boulevard Higinson, is unusually wide because a base commander insisted it be able to carry four tanks abreast; the South Pacific WWII Museum, opened in 2012, and the wreck of the SS President Coolidge remain popular tourism draws. Its population was 17,719 at the 2020 census.
