The accumulation of soluble salts in soil to a level that impairs plant growth, most often caused by evaporation concentrating salts left behind by irrigation water in arid and semi-arid climates with poor drainage. Salinization has degraded productive farmland across many of the world's major irrigated regions and is a significant driver of agricultural land loss.
