Yellow River

Rivers

China's second-longest river, known in Chinese as the Huang He, flowing roughly 5,400 kilometers from the Tibetan Plateau to the Bohai Sea and carrying the heavy loess silt that gives it its name and color. Often called the cradle of Chinese civilization, its banks were also the setting of some of history's most devastating floods.

The cause of the floods is the large amount of fine-grained loess carried by the river from the Loess Plateau, which is continuously deposited along the bottom of its channel.
