Bluefields is the capital of the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua, on a lagoon opening to the Caribbean Sea. Unlike Nicaragua's Spanish-speaking Pacific cities, Bluefields has a historically English-influenced Creole and Miskito population, tracing to the era of British protection over the Mosquito Coast, and English-based Creole remains widely spoken alongside Spanish. The city is a port and administrative center for the autonomous region and hosts the Maypole festival, a Creole cultural celebration held each May.
