Khon Kaen is the fourth largest city in Thailand and capital of Khon Kaen province, one of the four major cities of Isan in northeast Thailand known as the big four of Isan alongside Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima and Ubon Ratchathani. It sits on the Khorat Plateau at an elevation of 187 meters, about 450 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, and serves as the governmental seat of both the province and Mueang Khon Kaen district as a city municipality. The city municipality proper had 114,459 residents in 2019, while its broader urban area held 416,988 people, the fourth largest urban population in Thailand, and since the late twentieth century development has expanded beyond the municipal boundary into neighboring areas, forming a continuous urban area.
