Cerro de Pasco is the capital of Peru's Department of Pasco and Pasco Province, on the Andean altiplano at an elevation of about 4,330 meters, reaching 4,380 meters in its Yanacancha area, making it one of the highest cities in the world. The settlement began as a mining town in 1578, and the discovery of silver there in 1630 made the area one of the world's richest silver-producing regions; it remains an important center for mining silver, copper, zinc, and lead. The 2017 census recorded 58,899 residents. The city's urban area spans the districts of Chaupimarca, Yanacancha, and Simon Bolivar, and it connects to Lima by road and by the Ferrocarril Central Andino railway.
