Chalcis, also rendered Chalkida or Halkida, is the chief city of the island of Euboea in Greece, situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point. Its name survives from antiquity and derives from the Greek word for copper or bronze, even though no trace of ancient mining has been found in the area. During the Late Middle Ages the city was known by the Italian name Negroponte, a name that was also applied to the whole island of Euboea.
