Hungary's second-largest city after Budapest, the regional center of the Northern Great Plain and seat of Hajdu-Bihar County. It was the country's largest city in the 18th century, served as Hungary's capital during the 1848-1849 revolution, when the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty was declared in its Reformed Great Church, and again functioned as the capital at the end of World War II in 1944-1945; it is home to the University of Debrecen.
