FAQs

Why did Wąchock lose its town status in 1869?

Russian authorities stripped Wąchock of its city rights in 1869 as revenge for aiding the 1863 insurgents; it regained them in 1994.

Wąchock received its town charter in 1454 and lost it in 1869. After the January Uprising broke out in 1863, a battle between Russian forces and Polish rebels under General Marian Langiewicz took place there on February 3, 1863. In 1869 the Russian authorities, in revenge for the town's aid to the insurgents, deprived Wąchock of its city rights. The town regained its status in 1994.
