Chachapoyas is the capital of Peru's Amazonas Region, a city in the northern Peruvian mountains at an elevation of about 2,335 meters. Spanish conquistador Alonso de Alvarado founded the city on September 5, 1538. The 2017 census recorded a population of 32,026. Situated far from the Peruvian coast, Chachapoyas remains fairly isolated from other parts of Peru, reached by bus from Chiclayo and Cajamarca or by flights through Chachapoyas Airport, and its economy centers on agriculture, including sugar cane, orchids, and coffee.
