Doliche (Thessaly)

Southern Europe

Doliche was an ancient Greek city-state in the district of Perrhaebia in Thessaly, Greece, situated at the foot of Mount Olympus. Together with the neighboring towns of Azorus and Pythion it formed a political union known as the Tripolis, which was fought over during the Roman-Seleucid War and the Third Macedonian War in the second century BC before falling under Roman control. The site is occupied today by the modern town of Dolichi, where the nineteenth-century traveler William Martin Leake recorded ancient column fragments and a sepulchral stone in a local churchyard.
