Adramyttium

Western Asia

Adramyttium was an ancient city and bishopric in Aeolis, in what is now Turkey, originally sited at the head of the Gulf of Adramyttium at modern Oren in the Plain of Thebe, about 4 kilometers west of present-day Burhaniye, before relocating roughly 13 kilometers northeast and eventually becoming the town of Edremit. According to Aristotle, it was founded by and named for Adramytos, son of King Alyattes of Lydia, and it passed to Persian rule after Lydia fell in 546 BC. The city received Delian exiles in 422 BC and was thereafter considered Greek, came under Alexander the Greats control after his 334 BC victory at the Granicus, and under Rome became the seat of a conventus iuridicus with jurisdiction over the Troad and western Mysia. Saint Paul departed from Adramyttium by ship on his voyage to Rome, and the city was damaged by an earthquake under Emperor Trajan and later rebuilt.
