In what role does Traunstein first appear in the records?
In 1245, as a court and an office of Baumburg monastery.
Traunstein, then written Trauwenstain, officially enters history only in 1245, as a court and an office of the Baumburg monastery. The town's own history calls this an early sign that the place already served as a local center.
Why was brine piped from Bad Reichenhall to Traunstein?
Bad Reichenhall had a new brine spring but too little wood to boil it.
In 1613 a rich new brine spring was found at Bad Reichenhall, but it could not be used there for lack of wood. On 4 January 1616 Duke Maximilian made a revolutionary decision: instead of carrying fuel to the brine, as had been done before, the brine would go the opposite way. The brine pipeline from Bad Reichenhall to Traunstein that made this possible is called a technical masterpiece in the town's own salt park flyer.
