Wales

Constituent Country

Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom, located on the island of Great Britain and bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, the Bristol Channel to the south and the Celtic Sea to the south-west. It covers about 21,218 square kilometres, has more than 2,700 kilometres of coastline and is largely mountainous, with Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) as its highest summit. At the 2021 census it had a population of about 3.1 million, and its capital and largest city is Cardiff. A distinct Welsh culture emerged among the Celtic Britons after the Roman withdrawal in the fifth century, Wales was briefly united under Gruffudd ap Llywelyn in 1055, its conquest by King Edward I of England was completed in 1283, and the whole country was annexed by England under the Laws in Wales Acts of 1535 and 1542. Its devolved parliament is the Senedd.
