The French First Republic, sometimes called Revolutionary France, was founded on 21 September 1792 during the French Revolution, when the deputies of the Convention unanimously abolished the constitutional monarchy. It was declared one and indivisible on 25 September 1792 and lasted until Napoleon Bonaparte proclaimed the First Empire on 18 May 1804, although its form of government changed several times. The Republic was never officially proclaimed on 22 September 1792, but the decision was taken to date acts from the year I of the Republic. Its capital was Paris, and in 1800 it had about 29 million people, not counting its colonies.
