The Sasanian Empire, officially Eranshahr, was an Iranian empire founded and ruled by the House of Sasan from 224 to 651 AD, in late antiquity. Its founder Ardashir I rose as Arsacid power declined, and after defeating Artabanus IV of Parthia at the Battle of Hormozdgan in 224 it competed hard with the neighbouring Roman Empire, opening a new phase of the Roman-Iranian Wars. At its height it controlled all of modern Iran and Iraq and parts of Arabia, the Caucasus, the Levant, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, with Ctesiphon as its capital for all but its first two years. It fell to the Rashidun Caliphate in 651.
