The Delhi Sultanate was a late medieval empire based in Delhi that stretched over large parts of the Indian subcontinent for more than three centuries. It was established in 1206 in the former Ghurid territories in India, and its history is usually divided into five periods, the Mamluk, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi dynasties. Its foundation was laid by the Ghurid conqueror Muhammad Ghori, who routed a Rajput confederacy at Tarain in 1192. It reached its greatest extent under the Tughlaq dynasty, occupying most of the subcontinent, and it ended with the First Battle of Panipat in 1526.
