Lancashire is a ceremonial county in North West England, bordered by Cumbria to the north, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire to the east, Greater Manchester and Merseyside to the south and the Irish Sea to the west. Its largest settlement is the city of Preston. The county has an area of 3,079 square kilometres and had an estimated population of 1,601,645 in 2024, and it comprises twelve districts plus the two unitary areas of Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool. It was founded in the 12th century and became a palatine in 1351. It industrialised rapidly, and until 1974 it included both Liverpool and Manchester.
