A region of land receiving very little precipitation, generally too arid to support more than sparse vegetation, whose surface may be dominated by sand, gravel, exposed bedrock or salt flat depending on the local geology and wind and water history. Deserts occur in hot subtropical belts, in the rain shadow of mountain ranges, and in cold polar and high-altitude settings alike.
