A long, straight or gently sinuous sand ridge that runs parallel to, rather than across, the prevailing wind direction, built where two wind directions converge to funnel sand into an elongated line rather than a transverse ridge. Longitudinal dunes, also called seif dunes, can extend for tens of kilometres and are prominent across the Sahara, the Arabian Desert and central Australia.
