Playa

A flat-floored basin at the lowest point of an arid region's interior drainage, periodically covered by a shallow lake after rare rainfall and left as a dry, hard-packed or salt-crusted surface the rest of the time. Playas form because desert basins with no outlet to the sea trap whatever runoff reaches them, which then evaporates entirely rather than draining away.
