An extremely flat expanse of land encrusted with salt and other evaporite minerals, formed where a shallow desert lake has repeatedly evaporated, concentrating dissolved salts until they crystallize as a hard surface crust. Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest, formed this way over many cycles of flooding and evaporation in a closed desert basin.
