A large, pyramid-shaped sand dune with several sinuous ridges radiating outward from a central high point, built where wind blows from multiple directions rather than one consistent direction, so that sand accumulates upward rather than migrating steadily across the landscape. Star dunes are typically the tallest dune type in a desert and, because their complex shape resists simple migration, some of the most stable.
