Desert Pavement

A tightly packed, mosaic-like surface of closely fitted pebbles and small stones covering a desert floor, formed as wind and occasional water gradually remove the finer sand and dust from between the stones, leaving a residual armored layer that then protects the ground beneath it from further deflation. Once formed, desert pavement can remain stable and largely undisturbed for thousands of years.
