A long, wave-like ridge of sand oriented at a right angle to the prevailing wind direction, forming where abundant sand supply and a fairly steady wind combine to build a continuous series of parallel ridges across the desert or coastal sand surface. Transverse dunes are common where sand supply is plentiful, in contrast to the isolated, crescent-shaped barchan dunes typical of more limited sand availability.
