A dry riverbed or valley in a desert region that carries water only during and immediately after a rare rainfall event, remaining dry for most of the year. Wadis can flood suddenly and dangerously when distant rainfall sends a flash flood down a channel that appeared completely dry only hours before, and they have long served as natural travel routes through otherwise difficult desert terrain.
