Jingmen is a prefecture-level city in central Hubei province, China, in an area planted with cotton and oil crops. The prefecture's population was about 2.87 million at the 2010 census, with the urban area holding roughly 400,000 people across a jurisdiction of about 12,400 square kilometers. Jingmen sits between Wuhan to the east, the Three Gorges to the west, Xiaoxiang to the south, and Sichuan and Shaanxi to the north, and its name, meaning gateway to Jingzhou, reflects its historic role as the entrance to one of China's ancient Nine Provinces.
