How did Yangzhou begin?
Yangzhou began as the fortress of Hancheng, built in 485 BCE to guard the southern end of the Han Canal.
Yangzhou grew from a canal and a fortress. The Wu ruler Fuchai built the Han Canal, which linked the Yangtze River at present-day Yangzhou to the Huai River by 486 BCE. The next year he established a fortress called Hancheng to protect the southern end of the canal. That fortress is the earliest settlement the sources name on the site.
