Butrint

Butrint was an ancient Greek polis and later Roman city in Epirus that became the seat of an early Christian bishopric, located in what is now Vlore County, Albania, near the Greek border. First settled by the Chaonian Greek tribe, it passed through Greek, Roman, Byzantine and medieval periods before an earthquake flooded and effectively abandoned the site in the Middle Ages. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and today ranks among Albania's most important archaeological sites.
