Tyrol is an Austrian federal state made up of two non contiguous parts, North Tyrol and East Tyrol, separated by the state of Salzburg and the South Tyrol province of Italy, covering 12,534 square kilometers of the Eastern Alps and rising to the Grossglockner peak. Long an important transit region between northern and southern Europe by way of the Brenner Pass, Tyrol has Innsbruck as its capital.
