Aalst, Belgium

Aalst is a city and municipality in the province of East Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, situated on the Dender River about 31 kilometers northwest of Brussels. It had a population of 88,854 as of January 2022 across 78.66 square kilometers, making it the tenth largest city in Belgium, and its municipality includes the city proper along with eight surrounding villages such as Baardegem and Erembodegem. Aalst is first documented in the 9th century as the villa Alost, a dependency of the Abbey of Lobbes, and it is home to a UNESCO-listed belfry housing the oldest carillon in Belgium.
