Civitas Tungrorum

The Civitas Tungrorum was a large Roman administrative district covering what is now eastern Belgium, including the provinces of Liege, Limburg, Namur and Luxembourg, and part of the southern Netherlands, named for the Tungri people and capitaled at Aduatuca Tungrorum, present-day Tongeren. It originally belonged to the Roman province of Gallia Belgica before later transferring to Germania Inferior, and its territory became the basis for the medieval Diocese of Liege, whose boundaries roughly preserved the ancient civitas until they were reduced in 1559.
