Elewijt vicus

The Elewijt vicus was a Roman settlement on the site of the present-day village of Elewijt, part of Zemst in the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium, at the junction of a secondary road with the main Roman route between Tongeren and Boulogne. A temporary military camp was established there in the early first century AD, after which a village grew up around it, only to be devastated by Germanic raiders at the end of the second century and rebuilt with a different layout. The settlement continued until the late third century, when a second major attack ended its recovery, and the modern village of Elewijt developed half a mile to the south rather than on the original site.
