Spa, Belgium

Spa is a municipality and town in Liege Province in Wallonia, Belgium, in the Ardennes about 35 kilometers southeast of Liege. It is the origin of the English word spa, used for mineral bathing establishments worldwide. Known to the Romans as Aquae Spadanae, it developed from an ancient wellness destination into a fashionable resort during the 18th and 19th centuries that drew European nobility and royalty, and it briefly served as the headquarters of the German army in 1918 before hosting the postwar Spa Conference on war reparations. Spa remains known today for its natural mineral springs and bottled mineral water, for its motor racing circuit that hosts the Belgian Grand Prix of Formula One, and for its 2021 listing as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Great Spa Towns of Europe.
