Torhout

Western Europe

Torhout is a city and municipality in the Belgian province of West Flanders, in the Flemish Region of Belgium. The municipality is more than the town itself: besides Torhout proper it takes in the villages of Wijnendale and Sint-Henricus and the small hamlet of De Driekoningen. Its English-language name has French and West Flemish counterparts, Thourout and Toeroet. On 29 February 2024 the municipality had 24,891 inhabitants spread over 45.23 square kilometres, a density of about 445 people per square kilometre. The town is known for its role in Flemish cycling and music history: Karel Van Wijnendaele, founder of the Tour of Flanders, is counted among its people, and the Torhout-Werchter pop festival was among the largest annual festivals in Europe until 1999, when the Werchter half continued alone.
