Zottegem

Western Europe

Zottegem is a municipality and city in Belgium, in the Flemish province of East Flanders, and in older English and French sources it appears as Sotteghem or Sottegem. The municipality consists of the town of Zottegem itself together with the villages of Elene, Erwetegem, Godveerdegem, Grotenberge, Leeuwergem, Oombergen, Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove, Sint-Maria-Oudenhove, Strijpen and Velzeke-Ruddershove. On 1 January 2018 it had 26,373 inhabitants on 56.66 square kilometers, a density of about 470 people per square kilometer. It lies in the hilly Flemish Ardennes, whose cobbled streets feature in the spring cycling classics, and it is known for its ties to Lamoral, Count of Egmont, who is commemorated by a castle, a museum room, two statues and a crypt.
