Split is the second largest city in Croatia after the capital Zagreb, situated on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. It is the administrative seat of Split-Dalmatia County and the largest city on the Croatian coast, serving as a key economic, cultural, and transportation hub for the region. The city grew up around the historic core of Diocletian's Palace and has a continuous urban tradition spanning more than seventeen centuries; it has a population of over 160,000, with roughly 310,000 people in its wider metropolitan area.
