Joensuu

Joensuu is a Finnish city and regional capital in North Karelia, an eastern interior region of Finland, on the northern shore of Lake Pyhaselka at the mouth of the River Pielinen. It was founded in 1848 by the Russian emperor Nicholas I during the period when Finland was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire. With about 79,000 inhabitants, Joensuu is the 11th most populous municipality in Finland and a major urban and cultural center for eastern Finland, home to the University of Eastern Finland and known as the Forest Capital of Europe because of the presence of the European Forest Institute.
