Mikkeli

Mikkeli is a city in the South Savo region of Finland, in the Finnish Lakeland on the shores of Lake Saimaa. It is the 18th largest municipality in Finland by population, with 51,551 residents recorded at the end of 2025 across a total area of 3,229.57 square kilometers, most of it land. Mikkeli was granted town rights in 1838, and during the Second World War it served as the headquarters of the Finnish Defence Forces, a role commemorated by the crossed Marshal Mannerheim batons on the coat of arms of the city.
